The moment when Odysseus returns home and wants to greet his family, I decide I must help him. From his long journey, he has lost so much and gained so little. I pity him. Even though he was unfaithful to his wife, he has still chosen to return to her. He also wants to return to his son whom he hasn’t seen since infantry.
Throughout his journey, I have wanted to help Odysseus, but it isn’t yet my time to intervene. I have decided now is the time to help him. He finally deserves the help I will give him. I have decided to keep his identity secret from his family and kingdom to get rid of his wife’s suitors. He will stay in disguise and fool all the guests and when he proves that he is indeed Odysseus, he will slay them all. Every last one.
I am now descending to meet him…
The first thing I see is the withered old form of Odysseus. He has hunched shoulders and weathered skin. His form emanates that he has traveled long and wide in search for many things. He seems old and wise, but compared to I, he is only a youngling. My knowledge is great compared to the little he knows.
I go to him and he sees me. I offer help to him. I tell him that I will disguise him as a peasant man so that he may enter his own home unrecognized. Odysseus will prove himself worthy to his wife and then will slay every last suitor. I will then return him to his original form and he will try to return to the life he would have before the Trojan War.
I return to my mount in Olympus and watch as he slaughters each man one by one starting with Antinuous. Even though each death is sad, almost all are deserved for what they intended to do with the power they would possess.
With my vast knowledge, I know that even though Odysseus is mortal, he is definitely strong and willing enough to do this. I have little doubt that anything will go wrong, and I am proven right by his success. Now all that needs to be accomplished is his old and wise wife to accept him as who he truly is.
As they talk, I begin to actually get anxious…. I normally never feel much of the emotions that humans do, but when I do feel them, they are very strong and overwhelming. I try to ignore the strong rising feelings, but I find that it is useless. Like a mortal, I will have to be patient and wait for these events to unfold.
When Odysseus has convinced his wife that it is indeed him, I feel proud that I have changed his life for the better. His happiness is infectious. I know that he will have his “happily ever after”, so I must move on to my next project to help and better another persons life. Or maybe even the world.
